# I bond rate: 4.26% (May–October 2026)

The current Series I savings bond rate, what it is made of, when it changes, and why your own bond is probably earning something else.

The current I bond composite rate is 4.26% a year, for Series I savings bonds issued May–October 2026. It is made of a 0.90% fixed rate, which never changes for the life of that bond, and a 1.67% semiannual inflation rate, which every I bond shares.

The composite rate is fixed rate + 2 × semiannual inflation + (fixed × semiannual inflation ÷ 100), floored at 0%. The next announcement is November 1, 2026; Treasury sets new rates every May 1 and November 1.

Your own bond is probably not earning 4.26%. Everyone shares the same inflation component; nobody shares the same fixed rate. A bond issued May–October 2025 has a 1.10% fixed rate and earns 4.46% in its current six-month period. Each bond also picks the new inflation rate up at the start of its own six-month period, not on the announcement date.

Terms that do not change: $10,000 electronic per Social Security or Employer Identification Number per calendar year, $25 minimum, no redemption for 12 months, redeeming before five years costs the last 3 months of interest, and the bond stops earning after 30 years. Federal income tax only — exempt from state and local income tax. Discontinued — no paper I bonds with a tax refund since January 1, 2025.
